Weâd gone to one of the living rooms, and Christine had promptly put Jake to work, ordering him to get glasses and soda to mix with the tequila.
If I didnât know any better, I would have thought it was her house, the way she bossed everyone around.
That was just the way she was.
Never mind that she hadnât been invited, or wasnât welcome, Christine would always make herself at home.
Nate and I had chosen to sit on the couch, safety in numbers, although we kept to each of our sides. Christine had plucked a pillow from the couch and sat down at the end of the sofa
table, next to Nate. I almost rolled my eyes at her not so subtle attempt to be closer to him. Quinton, seeming oblivious to the fact that Christine was shamelessly flirting with Nate, sat
down on the comfy-chair opposite Nate and smiled down at Christine who barely registered him.
Jake came in holding a tray with 5 glasses and various juices and sodas. He placed the tray on the table and sat down on
the chair next to Quinton. âI didnât know what to get, so I just grabbed everything we had in the kitchen.â
âItâs perfect,â Christine grabbed the glasses and began mixing drinks.
Nate protested as she placed a glass in front of him. âI shouldnât⦠last time I had tequila it didnât end so wellâ¦â
âNonsense,â Christine cut him off and placed a hand on his knee. âA little tequila has never killed anyone.â
Nate frowned. âIâm fairly certain it has.â
Christine just laughed and continued mixing the drinks.
âHow come you arenât with your parents?â I asked her, wanting to take her attention away from Nate.
âIâm not going to go all the way to L.A. for one week of vacation.â
âWhy not? You could just teleport there,â I suggested, hoping to get rid of her.
She looked up at me. âIn case you didnât know, then I donât have that power. And the authorities arenât exactly happy about magi using teleportation potions for leisure trips.â
âWell, you could get someone to teleport you there. We all know how persuasive you can be,â I told her.
âWhat if I donât want to go home, Claire? Have you thought about that?â Christine snapped.
I sat back, shocked at her sudden emotional outburst. It wasnât
like her to show feelings.
Christine quickly recovered and smiled. âSo, how about a drinking game?â
âSure,â Jake quickly answered, clearly surprised by
Christineâs explosion as well. âWhat do you want to play?â
âHow about âNever have I everâ?â All signs of Christineâs anger had disappeared, and she was her old annoying self again.
After having just set her off, I didnât dare protest, even though the only things worse than spending a night drinking with Christine, was spending a night playing prying games with her.
âHow will Quinton play?â Nate asked.
Christine quickly glanced at him. âHeâll just drink whenever heâs done something, right?â
Quinton gave a quick nod and picked up his glass.
I shook my head.
It was seriously messed up how she treated him. I still wasnât entirely sure he was here of his own free will.
